Cashmere vs Alpaca: What's the Difference?

Cashmere and alpaca are often grouped together as luxury fibers, but they come from entirely different animals. Cashmere is sourced from the cashmere goat, while alpaca comes from the alpaca—a South American camelid unrelated to either goats or sheep [source: alpaca fiber structure documentation].

That difference goes beyond where the fibers come from. Their internal structure is different, and that shapes how they feel, how they insulate, and where each one performs best.

What Is the Difference Between Cashmere and Alpaca?

That hollow core is the defining distinction. More than any other characteristic, it's what gives alpaca its unique performance profile compared to cashmere.

Is Alpaca Warmer Than Cashmere?

Yes—per unit of weight, alpaca generally has the advantage.

The result is a genuine structural advantage for alpaca when warmth is compared by weight. It's a property of the fiber itself, not simply a marketing claim.

Is Alpaca Hypoallergenic Compared to Cashmere?

Cashmere is also naturally low in lanolin and is generally comfortable for people with sensitive skin. For those who are especially sensitive, though, alpaca's near-total absence of lanolin may offer a slight advantage.

What Is Baby Alpaca, and How Does It Compare to Cashmere?

Despite the name, baby alpaca doesn't necessarily come from a young alpaca. The term refers to the fiber grade, specifically the fleece from the animal's first shearing [source: baby alpaca shearing documentation].

That first-shear fiber is noticeably finer and softer than fiber from later shearings. In fact, it comes close enough to cashmere in fineness that, for most people, telling the difference by touch alone becomes genuinely difficult.

Which Is More Sustainable?

Alpacas have padded feet instead of hooves, and they graze in a way that causes less damage to grasslands. By comparison, overgrazing by large cashmere goat herds has been linked to land degradation in several major cashmere-producing regions.

As with any natural fiber, farming practices matter. But at a broad industry level, alpaca is generally regarded as the lower-impact option.

Which Is Softer, Cashmere or Alpaca?
